Dermal fillers, also known as soft tissue fillers or injectable fillers, are products used to add volume and fullness to various areas of the face, temporarily diminishing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and hollowed areas.

Dermal fillers are typically made from substances like hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, or polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most commonly used type because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body.

Dermal fillers can be used to address various cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines (e.g., nasolabial folds, marionette lines, crow’s feet).
  • Restoring lost volume in the cheeks or temples.
  • Enhancing lip volume and shape.
  • Correcting under-eye hollows (tear troughs).
  • Reshaping the nose (non-surgical rhinoplasty).
  • Contouring the jawline and chin.
  • Filling in acne scars and other facial depressions.

Results are usually visible immediately, although there may be some swelling or bruising initially. These side effects are generally temporary and resolve within a few days to week.

The longevity of results varies depending on the type of filler used but typically lasts from several months to over a year.
